This book is one of the first collective works to emerge from the ANR project titled RIIG: Recueil informatisé des inscriptions gauloises. As its title indicates, it is a continuation of an earlier compilation in print, the Recueil des inscriptions gauloises (RIG), which was published between 1985 and 2002 as Supplement No. 45 to the journal Gallia. The RIIG project aims to update and expand the data published in the volumes RIG, I and RIG, II.1 and to make them accessible to the academic community via a digital platform. In this book, our goal is to produce a critical synthesis of the available data on lapidary epigraphy in the Transalpine Gaulish language, moving beyond a mere inventory. We seek to enhance our understanding of how Gaulish-language inscriptions on stone shed light on the social structures of Celtic society in Transalpine Gaul between the second century BC and the first century AD. This synthesis brings together the contributions of various experts – archaeologists, epigraphists, linguists, and historians – and constitutes a collective monograph reflecting the very latest state of knowledge on the subject.
