Architecture romaine d'Asie mineure : les monuments de Xanthos et leur ornementation
This book is the first study of Roman buildings – either already known or recently discovered – in the site of Xanthos. It offers a description of the main buildings of the city and considers the multiple non-assigned blocks reused in late-period buildings but which allow a technical and stylistic analysis. Synthesis chapters describe the evolution of architectural forms and decorations showing how far stylistic analysis constitutes a reliable dating tool. The Xanthian architectural analysis allows to distinguish two main phases of development, generally corresponding to the Flavian period and the end of the 2nd century AD. Xanthos is compared to other Lycian cities as well as the great cities of Roman Asia Minor. Confrontation shows how generalised new trends of the period are but also the permanence of local features. The example of Xanthos is thus really typical of Roman architecture in Asia Minor.
