Vivre et penser les frontières dans le monde méditerranéen antique
This book presents an interdisciplinary reflexion about the notion of border in Antiquity. The studies within this volume span the whole Mediterranean world, from the Pillars of Hercules to the banks of the Indus. They show how problematic the notion of border was even in ancient times: this concept articulates different logical schemes, and covers a wide range of issues, from political delimitation of territory, to religious demarcation of the sacred space. The notion will not only be understood in its concrete meaning, but its abstract or metaphorical implications will also be taken into account. Furthermore, this volume includes studies focusing on the question of border observance or trespassing; some other papers question the function of boundaries in shaping social, cultural and linguistic identities.
