La norme sous la République et le Haut-Empire romains. Élaboration, diffusion et contournements

This volume unites experts on the history of law, on political, military, intellectual, cultural, social and religious history who analyse the places and authorities engaged in the creation of norms, as well as the zones of resistance to normative constraints. About thirty contributions of French, German, Belgian, Swiss and Italian scholars highlight the intricate problem of normativity in Ancient Rome, from various points of view. Firstly, particular attention has been paid to the importance of sage traditions (especially philosophy, drama, poetry, history) in the “factory of the norm”. Then, the field of religious norms has been studied by several experts in the matter, thus proposing an entwined reflection about traditional Roman religion, the cults of Isis, and monotheist beliefs. A third area of research highlights the role of institutions and the elite in the emergence of norms, by analysing various political offices, the role of the Senate, or the role of the princeps. This perspective is complemented by a thorough look at the populus, the tribunes of the plebs, as well as the popular assemblies. Finally, after an examination of the impact of the army and the civil wars of the 1st century BC on the emergence of new norms, the ways to diffuse norms are analysed under various angles: through coinage, graffiti, the exempla or legislation.
