Atlas Historique des Villes de France 55
Besançon
The Atlas historique de Besançon is the 55th volume in the Atlas historique des villes de France series. This multidisciplinary work offers a synthesis of historical and archaeological knowledge of the city’s history.
The formation of the urban landscape from its protohistoric origins to the present day is traced from three complementary perspectives. The Historical Plan is meticulously reconstructed from the 1834–1835 land registry maps. Further insights are provided by two separate sections of commentary, with the General Overview offering both a holistic and diachronic perspective while Sites and Monuments provides close-ups of individual landmarks.
The Atlas historique de Besançon offers a comprehensive overview of the city’s history up to the present day with the ambition that the book will become a valuable tool for all researchers in urban history and will be useful to all those involved in urban development while also satisfying the curiosity of the general public.
Marie-Laure Bassi is the director of Besançon’s historical heritage, medieval archeologist and historian of art, specialist in building archaeology.
Thomas Chenal is a medieval archaeologist, responsible of the operation within the joint preventive archaeology service of the city of Besançon and spatial representation specialist.
