This book retraces, in chronological order, the long history of the archaeological site of "La Chapelle", discovered on an ancient islet on the left bank of the Gironde estuary, in the commune of Jau-Dignac-et-Loirac. Located in a changing environment, whose landscapes have evolved since Antiquity, it has the particularity of having been occupied successively by a Gallo-Roman temple, then by a small church and a cemetery at the beginning of the Middle Ages (7th-11th centuries), which were followed, at the end of the 12th century, by new burials and a chapel dedicated to saint Simeon, which continued until the 18th century. Discovered by chance by a farmer, this site was the subject of a programmed excavation from 2001 to 2009 and served as a “training camp” for students of archaeology and biological anthropology from the universities of Bordeaux Montaigne and Bordeaux. Acquired by the commune, it has been open to the public since 2016. The six chapters of the book allow the reader to discover these successive occupations, abundantly illustrated by plans, photographs and reconstructions. They will also find a presentation of the many remarkable objects discovered on the site (gold ring, damascened buckle plate, bone comb, etc.), several of which are on display at the Musée d'Aquitaine in Bordeaux. This book also allows us to appreciate the methods and analyses used by archaeologists and anthropologists to reconstruct this unique history in the New Aquitaine region.
