Archaeology and epigraphy have offered us, for several decades, numerous indications of major changes in the indigenous societies of Northern and Central Hispania (Mediterranean coast between Emporion and Saguntum, Ebro basin and Upper Douro Valley) between the end of the Celtiberian wars and the civil wars. This book aims to distinguish indigenous initiatives from the constraints of provincialisation, based on an analysis that uses all available documentation, integrating numismatic and literary sources.

After introducing the indigenous societies and the conditions of Roman domination, especially from 133 BC onwards, the analysis focuses specifically on the most remarkable mutations, both urban and epigraphic. This is followed by a study of the impact of civil wars on the process of the Hispanics integration.

The early Western Romanisation during the Republican period has too rarely been studied and highlighted for itself. This book proposes to fill a gap by studying one of the most original cases: The Northern part of the Citerior. Between Hellenisation and Romanisation, the cultural influences coming from Italy must be highlighted, since the main actors of this process punctuated by the history of Rome were the local elites.
