This volume, which is meant to celebrate Professor Lucienne Deschamps’ retirement, contains fifteen papers devoted to one of her preferred subjects, Augustan poetry. Many papers study how such authors as Vergil, Ovid or Propertius viewed the past of Rome and how they dealt with various events or characters involved in the history of Rome as being either structural components of the Romans’ collective memory or part of the policy and propaganda operated by Augustus. Other studies focus on how Augustan poets were viewed by some of their later readers, how these poets’ reading of the past was integrated into later times, how these poets themselves became part of the past and, ultimately and more widely, of our own cultural and literary world. This volume includes a bibliography of the works of Prof. Lucienne Deschamps.
