In this volume, in honour of Claude Vial, former professor of Greek History at Paul Valéry-Montpellier III University, are gathered 12 original contributions by other scholars and 4 articles by Claude Vial herself which are republished for this occasion. Claude Vial, a historian with a fine knowledge of both inscriptions and Greek literature, is well known for her work on Delos and Greek society, particularly on the history of women. It will therefore come as no surprise that these Mélanges presented to her contain papers on institutions (dokimasia in Delos, and two types of liturgy, hippotrophia and boutrophia), anthroponymy (in Eretria and Athens) and religious practice (the groups of therapeutai, special rites of Thasos, Thessaly and Arcadia). Other papers touch on women (in the province of Mauretania) and several historical questions (the sources for the history of Alexander, the urbanisation of Cyprus in the Hellenistic period).

After these studies by friends and colleagues of Claude Vial, the editors have chosen to republish four articles written by the honoranda, offering a synthesis on several points of the history of the Greek world, which the author has revised for this occasion. The volume includes a list of Claude Vial’s publications.
