This book, resulting from the ninth international congress of the Neronian studies (Villa Vigoni) in October 3-6, 2012, gathers 31 contributions from specialists on multiple fields of study on the theme of holiday in the 1st century AD. Holiday is considered in its social and economic, cultural and intellectual, ethical and political dimensions, not only in Italy but also in provinces. A first part focuses on the knowledge of the otium, its practices, representations, stereotypes and criticisms. A second part is dedicated to holiday’s geography and planning. A third part highlights the political components that we find in the princes’ residences (the place of decision is no longer Rome, but where the prince stays), but also in the upper sphere of ruling circles.
