The volume of tributes to Xavier Loriot (1941-2013) presented here seeks to perpetuate the memory of a scholar, as great as he was modest, who left us prematurely. In all the fields he tackled, he proved to be a tireless researcher, never backing down from epistemological obstacles. The communications, which follow one another, offered by his friends, reflect the diversity of his intellectual interests as well as the links he had with the scientific community. He chose to prioritise the field of the Roman Empire history, especially from 222 to 253. As a result of this choice, he was attached to the controversial but also fascinating text that is Augustan History. In another field, he was interested in the role and function of coins, in light of discoveries, in the western part of the Empire, of monetary treasures, as well as isolated gold coins – this is confirmed by his role in the launching and creation of the corpus of the Monetary Treasures of France, and the studies on the scattering of aurei in Gaul and Brittany. It is the memory of this brilliant mind that this volume seeks to carry on.
