« Those in the castle »… Not so long ago, this turn of phrase, in a politician’s mouth, reminded us that castles are figures full of dreams, fantasies, and obsessions that haunt collective and individual imagination. The communications presented during this conference allowed us to measure the abundant diversity of the images generated by the castle. This diversity appeared to be mainly linked to the difference of perceptions: gazes from, in a time when society still identifies as profoundly hierarchical, those at the bottom; gazes from within, from the chatelains; gazes, finally, from the outside, whether this exteriority comes from a chronological distance or a methodical step back.
