The recent renewals of historiography multiplied the possibilities of analysis of the role and place of writing in the thought and exercise of power in the Middle Ages. For societies and cultures based on orality and gesture, writing was an instrument, an act, and an expression of power. By focusing on the writings of power, these thirteen studies question the practices, their forms as much as their meanings, within cultures and political experiments in the Iberian Peninsula and the Maghreb. The multidisciplinary approach – history, numismatic, diplomacy, epigraphy, art history, literature, law…, crossed at different levels of variable analysis in space and time, allows us to shed light on the production, reception, conservation, but also on the transformation and circulation of texts and writings that serve, express, and monumentalize power, on both sides of the borders and of the Strait of Gibraltar, from the Pyrenees to the Saharan, and in the Western Mediterranean basin.
