This volume investigates the beginning of the construction of the scientific and academic discipline that deals with Etruscan history and civilization as an independent field - Etruscology. Indeed, although the Etruscans are known as the oldest people in Italy and one of the oldest European civilization, their history was not the object of any specific scientific studies until the early 20th century: the Etruscans were considered inferior to both Greeks and Romans and were often compared to them. The proceedings of this first conference devoted to the history of Etruscology in the 20th century highlight how studies on Etruscans got autonomy, recognition and influence thanks to a prestigious journal, international conferences, and university chairs. In this way, the history of the Etruscans became not only part of a national history, but also an international science.
