In Asian Greece, among Ancient Carian cities which History has, one way or another, kept trace of, Bargasa, Harpasa, Neapolis and Orthosia share a rather secondary place. At about 55 miles from the Aegean Sea, between Nysa and Antioch, these four cities’ territory covers more precisely the lower valley of Harpasos (actual Aksu, “White River”), one of Maeander’s main affluents along with Maryas, Mosynus, and Lycus. Even though the region nestled between Karıncalı Dağ to the East and Madran Mountain to the West has already been precisely described, Bargasa, Harpasa, Neapolis, and Orthosia were however neglected by the archaeologists for a long time. Indeed, not only these cities do not seem to have been much talked about during Antiquity, but the interest given to them in modern times has for a long time suffered from the proximity with better known and more studied sites such as Nysa, Aphrodisias, and Tabai.
