Croesus, Pactolus… ancient Lydia became legendary. The study of this region thus traditionally focused on two main points: on the one hand research on currency origins and the Lydo-Persian period, and the city of Sardis on the other hand. This book offers to study from a numismatic corpus to establish the history of Lydia throughout the different imperial experiments of the Hellenistic and Roman periods.

With the extension of pergamenian power, and therefore the growing rivalry between the Attalids and the Seleucids, the Lydian cities found themselves at the centre of the great international stakes of the period. Despite the Roman installation at the end of the 2nd century BC, Lydia stayed troubled by the Hellenistic period. The study of the imperial period opens up other perspectives – questioning the traditional rupture between the Hellenistic and Roman periods, understanding the consequences of Augustus’ coinage reform, studying relations between Hellenism and Romanity, and questioning again the 3rd century “crisis”.

This study wishes to inscribe Lydia over a long time to allow the questioning of the ways and means of its integration into dominating imperial spaces and to interrogate the Hellenization and Romanization process of an Eastern region with a prestigious past.
