The Athenian orator Demades, mostly known from late sources, has often been depicted as the perfect example of the treacherous and disloyal politician. Examination of the few surviving contemporary texts and inscriptions reveals a subtler reality.
This book is not meant to rehabilitate Demades. Its main object is to show how and why, through opposed views and people, the Greek and Roman sources have built an image of the complete foil and in what conditions the 19th and 20th centuries historians have adopted and amplified this view.
