This collection brings together a series of papers devoted to investigating the organisation of markets in the Greco-Roman world. It concentrates on the study of agoranomes and aediles by analysing the status of these magistrates and the roles they fulfilled. The volume combines case studies and more general approaches, including analyses of individual documents, as well as broader reflections on the evolution of the role of the magistrates and on the strategies adopted for controlling markets in the ancient Mediterranean. Situated at the crossroads between several approaches to the study of institutions, economics and legal history, this volume contributes to the renewal of research into the regulation of exchange in ancient cities.
