If the exploitation of Caesar’s name and legacy has already been the object of many casual observations and limited studies (sometimes going in various directions), a general survey of the question is still lacking. This book is the product of a two-day conference held in Bordeaux. Its aim is to propose a first overall assessment of the question. Two aspects, deeply linked and supplementing each other, are considered: on the one hand, continuities and discontinuities between Caesar and Augustus – which leads to examine first of all their political practices; on the other, Caesar’s representation in Augustan times – which forces to tackle the question of his image in the official ideology, in literature (and even in the several literary genres), but also in art (sculpture). After a first contribution devoted especially to historiography, the book consists of three parts: a first one analyses various aspects of the link between Caesar and Augustus; a second one offers regional studies; a third one is dedicated to the main literary sources.
