This volume Rutilius Namatianus, aristocrate païen en voyage et poète contains the papers delivered at the international symposium, held under the same title at the University of Paris Nanterre on October 25 and 26, 2018. They all come from recognized specialists of the field and are presented here in a thematic order. We intended to focus on Rutilius Namatianus, a Gallo-Roman aristocrat and high civil servant, and on his De reditu, in which he narreted in poetic form his return from Rome in Gallia Narbonensis in autumn 417.
In addition to his literary qualities, Rutilius provides in his verses essential documentary elements for a critical period of the Roman Empire: the years which followed the invasions of 406 in Gaul and the capture of Rome from 410. His praise of Rome, his tirades against the monks and the Jews are famous. But Rutilius also leaves gray areas which raise many questions.
This volume examines De reditu suo and its author from various points of view, historical, geographic, cultural, literary, and as such constitutes a kind of sum of current knowledge about Rutilius.
