The castle elicits specific greed from the public towards what happens or could happen inside. Any event that took place within its walls is granted a special impact. This comes from the belief that tight bonds are built – or that an identification operated – between the eerie silhouettes of the castle, its towers, and the temper of their inhabitants. Children strongly feel this way about Bluebeard and tourists can hardly separate the feelings born from Versailles or Neuschwanstein castle to Louis XIV’s or Ludwig II of Bavaria’s personality. Thus, the large number of famous “affairs” taking place in castles or manors makes sense. (…)
Communications presented during this conference held in Périgueux prompt to highlight the exceptional weight of mystery, ritual, and staging of every event taking place in castles. Sometimes, the fascination aroused by the place paradoxically puts events’ incidents in the background, even though it enriches their reach.
