The excavations that took place between 2001 and 2008 on the ancient site of Barzan (Charente-Maritime) revealed an area of occupation in the sanctuary quarter of the Moulin du Fâ, near the public baths and sanctuary that were the subject of monographs published in 2003 and 2010. From 50-30 B.B. onwards, occupation intensified in this sector; a sequence of rebuilding and re-organisation provide evidence for a lively community. After A.D. 70 more significant public monuments appear along the route between this sector and the temple zone, whilst the area to the rear of the plot is increasingly abandonned.

Drawing on information from artefacts, architectural remains, and paleoenvironnmental, studies, the contributions of more than thirty researchers have brought together a fascinating picture of the everyday life of a prestigious settlemnt of the Santoni and of a port of Saintes, the capital of Aquitania. We are left with a vivid impression of the rise and decline of a small but dynamic community and its surrounding area.
