This volume presents papers delivered at two workshops as well as several supplementary contributions related to the same themes. Among the best specialists of the archaeology of Mainland Greece and Asia Minor, the authors present unpublished information that sheds new light on two complementary subjects the time frame of which starts with the end of the Hellenistic period up to the iind cent. A.D. In Greece and Asia Minor this period is characterized by a remarkable yet insufficiently studied evolution in urbanism and architecture.
The first section is devoted to civic basilicas in Greece and Asia Minor. In addition to the Roman colonies of Corinth and Philippi, he monuments of Micrasiatic cities, whether small (Lyrbe-Seleukeia, Tlos, Assos, Xanthos) or big (Smyrna, Magnesia, Hierapolis) reveal the vitality and the creativity of local architects.
The second section concentrates on the question of agoras in Asia Minor, particularly in Caria and Lycia where local traditions probably restrained the evolution of Graeco-Roman formulas. Did Pergamon play an exemplary role as it is generally assumed? Is the agora an urban form imported by the Greeks and preserved with no change in Roman times? The case studies presented in this book provide necessary elements to answer such questions.
