This collective volume is devoted to the countryside in north-eastern Roman Gaul, between the Seine basin and the German limes, from the late La Tène period up until the late fifth century CE. It is the first volume of the final publication of a project (acronym “Rurland”) funded by the European Research Council (ERC). The goal was to integrate data seldom studied together and most often unpublished, so as to promote an interdisciplinary and multi-scale approach to the whole of the geographical area ranging from the sites proper to the territories: archaeological excavations, especially those from the most recent development-led archeology, botanical remains, bone material, quality and nature of the soils, aerial photographs, LIDAR data. The ultimate purpose is to understand the spatial and historical dynamics of the rural world of the time and their regional diversity. In this perspective, prominence has been given to study windows at various scales depending on the quality, abundance and nature of the information they yield.
Two volumes will be published successively: this first one is devoted to the regional studies carried out within the framework of the Rurland program. The general synthesis will follow in a second step.
