In this volume, Estelle Bertrand brings together most of the articles that François Hinard, Professor of Roman history at the Sorbonne, had written at the time of his untimely death. They are dedicated to his major field of study – the history of the late period of the Roman Republic. The book is organised around four main themes reflecting Professor Hinard’s global and interdisciplinary conception of research. Not only is the critical reconsideration of the Syllanian period at the core of the historian’s investigation, but also the whole history of Rome through the troubled times of the last two centuries of the Republic. The evolution of government institutions in the transition from the Republic to the Principate, the political conflicts and their materialisation within the territory of the Vrbs itself as well as their social and military aspects: those are the topics generating throughout the articles a consistent reflection to which we clearly owe the revised image we now have of the “last Roman Republic”.
