This volume is a tribute to François Guillaumont, whose authoritative studies on Cicero’s philosophy and correspondence, on Roman religious thought and on the history of ancient doctrines inspired the 26 contributions presented here in four sections. The first part deals with divinatory theory and practices (Cicero’s De diuinatione, the role and representation of the augur, the prophetic figure of Carmenta at the origins of Rome, dream and sign interpretations). The second part delves into certain questions of ancient religion and theology (the college of epulones, sacred arithmology, Numa Pompilius by Roman historians, divine perception and celestial hierarchy, arguments for God’s existence according to Justus Lipsius). The third is centred on forms and models of wisdom (law and philosophy by Ulpian, the ‘art of living’, Gabriel Chappuys’ translation of Seneca’s works, philosophical inspiration in Gregory of Nazianzus, the Distichs of Cato, the meaning of consolation according to Marsilio Ficino). The last section is devoted to various aspects of Cicero’s influence on posterity, not to forget the contemporary reading of the De diuinatione by Amin Maalouf.
