I was always interested in browsing publications from these Rencontres – it is now quite the fleshed-out collection –, focusing of course on the last centuries of the Middle Ages, which is the main topic of my inquiry. And I realized that most of the themes could have had a feminine dimension to them: nobility identity, castles and power, castles and imagination, castles and entertainment, and even castles and war since there were many instances, even medieval, when chatelaines coordinated their house’s defences while their husbands or sons were away. Which means sooner or later the theme of castles and women had to get introduced and impose itself. Now it’s done.
