Published a year and a half after an international conference on Crete which took place at Montpellier, this book presents the main results of this meeting and its works. All written or translated in French, some 20 original articles deals with the history of the largest Aegean Island from the Ancient Times up to the 20th century.

Three major themes organize this book: the natural and cultural symbols and features of Cretan common and subaltern insular identities; the Western and Greek learned representations of Crete; the political, religious and strategic importance of an insular frontier and place of arms in the past struggles for the supremacy over the Eastern Mediterranean.
