This volume seeks to show how the historical, ideological, social or religious questions found a privileged expression in the Latin epic and how this expression evolves with political, philosophical, religious or aesthetic upheavals. Several articles concentrate naturally on the classical epic, the foundation of the Latin tradition, but many others reconsider the inflections of the genre in post-classical, late antique and mediaeval Latin. The general theme focuses thus on the epic expression in its dealings with the time of the authors and the political and ethical issues related to it. The articles gathered here illuminate a long history of epic and, embracing a wide variety in the tradition of Latin epic, they provide a valuable reference work.
