Known as one of the main archaeological sites of Tunisia, Dugga, former Thugga, is one of the chief places of interest of ancient Nothern Africa. this history can be seen in the impressive ruins and, still today, above all in the stone, inscriptions - more than 2000 - brought to light by surveys and excavations. Since 1994, a franco-Tunisian team has set itself the task of making a complete inventory of Latin inscriptions of Dougga. This team offers in this volume a selection of 162 texts of every kind discovered on the site: long dedications engraved on the entablature of public buildings, bases of statues of Roman emperors and of members of the elite, dedications or epitaphs.
These inscriptions shed light on both the African and Roman elements of this provincial milieu, and, thanks to the number of texts, especially rich dossiers have been put together on the institutions, the social life and social elites. They thus give us an insight into the Romanization of the Mediterranean world. They show the growing support of the local people of a dual, African and Roman, civilization, which long enjoyed a very special status. In the end, the attraction of Rome prevailed, at least on the elite, as shown by the fact that after the middle of the IIIrd century Dugga became a Roman colony.
