The forum, at the political heart of the Roman civitas, has inspired a wealth of literature. Our understanding of these sets of structures has been greatly advanced by the increasing number of archaeological discoveries over recent years. This volume, the product of a seminar in Roman archaeology held at the University of Toulouse, seeks to establish where we stand with regard to these new groups of evidence. The forum is studied here over the long-term, from the earliest wood and earth structures of the protohistoric period and the ensuing debates over their function, to the fate of the forum at the end of Antiquity. This work concentrates on Roman Gaul, but also takes into account evidence from neighbouring regions.
